RCMP Investigates Abasand Shooting

The Wood Buffalo RCMP is investigating an Abasand shooting, and a local Fort MacMurray man was admitted to the hospital with wounds from the incident. The shooting occurred on Sunday morning at approximately 4:30 am. According to the Wood Buffalo RCMP reports of gunshots fired were called in from a house close to where the Abasands shooting occurred. When the police responded to the call they found a 32 year old man from Fort MacMurray in the residence with gunshot wounds sustained to his body. The scene of the shooting was on Ashgrove Drive, and the victim was taken to Northern Lights Regional Health Centre where he was listed as being in stable condition. When the RCMP arrived the condition of the victim was deemed critical and medical assistance was requested right away.

According to Wood Buffalo RCMP Cpl George Cameron the Abasand shooting involved wounds that required immediate treatment. Cameron explained “The call came in via 911 and the person who called said they heard several shots. When anyone gets hit by gunshots, you’ve got to make sure they get treated ASAP.” Police are seeking suspects who are believed to have been involved in the shooting but complete details on the suspects being sought have been kept under wraps so far. The investigation is still in the early stages, and the RCMP is asking for help from anyone who has any information about the recent Abasand shooting. RCMP Investigating Gregoire Homicide

The RCMP is investigating a Gregoire homicide, and so far few details have been released. On March 17, at approximately 8 am, the police received a call from emergency medical services about a man receiving treatment who had been stabbed and was found in the road. The victim was transported to Northern Lights Regional Health Centre with severe injuries, and he passed away as a result of his injuries later the same day. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was homicide and the RCMP believes that the stabbing was not a random act and that the victim and the suspect knew each other although the exact cause of the attack has not been disclosed. According to RCMP Cst. Ashley Quallie “All of those details aren’t being released right now in regards to the investigation because it’s undergoing.”

According to the RCMP the Gregoire homicide was initially classified as an aggravated assault, however the victim’s death and the autopsy mean that it is now a homicide case. The victim was not a Fort MacMurray native but was residing in the local area, and RCMP CST. Quallie stated “We don’t currently have a suspect in custody, but our major crimes unit is diligently working on the investigation” The name of the victim was withheld at the request of family members. The RCMP Had a Busy Weekend After Numerous Highway 63 Collisions

The RCMP had a very busy weekend after there were numerous Highway 63 collisions, with 10 separate accidents that involved a minimum of 17 vehicles. One male from Fort MacMurray was airlifted to the hospital because of the injuries sustained during a collision. The Boyle RCMP received a number of complaints about a stretch of highway 63 covering around 25 kilometers located near Wandering River. The complaints came in between 5 am and 9 am on Friday morning. According to Sgt. Kevin McGillivray a freezing rain which occurred the previous night contributed to treacherous roadway conditions and played a role in the numerous collisions and crashes at the start of the weekend. McGillivray stated “There was some freezing rain there. Weather certainly played a factor in the collisions that occurred on that date. This time of year, when we get rain when the temperatures are hovering around zero, can make for treacherous driving conditions.”

The numerous highway 63 collisions over the weekend had the highway closed in spots and the RCMP really busy at times. One collision caused a 34 year old male from Fort MacMurray to be taken to an Edmonton hospital by airlift because of injuries, but the male was released on Sunday after recovering and was in stable condition before his release. Traffic on Highway 63 in the affected areas was very slow or even at a standstill at times s workers removed debris, vehicles damaged in the collisions, and other safety hazards in the roadway. The highway was down to a single lane open for part of the day.

Have You Seen Heaven-Leigh Grandjambe? Wood Buffalo RCMP Search for Missing Teen

The Wood Buffalo RCMP is searching for 15 year old Heaven-Leigh Grandjambe, who was last seen last Wednesday and is missing. RCMP Constable Mylene Michon reports that the 15 year old was last seen when she visited the Birchwood Trails in Thickwood with a Fort McKay school group. What is known so far is that the missing teen left the main group along with several of her friends, and they went to the Signal Road MacDonalds close by. When the group came back the teen was not with them. Constable Michon said that the RCMP is not aware of the story that was provided to police about what happened to the 15 year old between the time that the friends left to go to MacDonalds and when they returned.

The RCMP is asking that anyone who has seen Heaven-Leigh Grandjambe or who may have information about where the missing teenager is to please contact law enforcement or Crime Stoppers so that the teen can be returned to her home and family. The last time that Heaven-Leigh was seen was around 6:30 pm on Wednesday March 4 in the area near Signal Road and Birchwood Trails. Heaven-Leigh Grandjambe is 15 years old, she is aboriginal, and she weighs 140 pounds and is 5’1” tall. Heaven has brown hair and brown eyes, and it is not known if she simply ran away or if she has been the victim of a crime. RCMP Investigates Suspicious Death in Fort MacMurray

A suspicious death in Fort MacMurray is being investigated by the RCMP. The death occurred on Monday night at an apartment complex located on MacDonald Ave. Details so far are few and incomplete, and police are still looking into the incident and are releasing little information to the public right now because the investigation is ongoing. A complaint was made to the RCMP at 11:20 pm, and the caller complained of a disturbance. When responding officers arrived at the apartment complex to investigate they found a male in his 20s who was deceased. So far the RCMP has not released the cause of death, only reporting that it was suspicious. The name of the deceased male has also not been released.

While the RCMP is keeping mum on the suspicious death in Fort MacMurray Monday night they are asking the public for any information. If someone knows anything about what happened in the apartment that led to the death of the young male they are encouraged to contact the local RCMP to report what they know. Right now there is little information and that leaves many questions unanswered. Hopefully all of the facts in this suspicious death will be made clear, and if the man was killed the individual responsible is identified. The RCMP can be contacted by calling 780-788-400. Bob Couture, Former RCMP Chief, Looks Forward to New Role With Municipality of Wood Buffalo

Former RCMP chief Bob Couture is looking forward to his new role with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, after spending the last four decades in a uniform and enforcing the law. Couture recently retired from the position of Wood Buffalo RCMP officer in charge, and he will be the new executive director of community and protective services. This department is in charge of bylaw services, rural and aboriginal relations, the RCMP contract, and emergency services. Couture explained “It’s been a tremendous experience, working in various different roles and various different functions. It’s been an exciting career, and I take all those skills and experience and bring them to the new challenges I have in the RMWB.” Dale Bendfeld will also play a role in Bylaw Services and RCMP Support, stating that in his previous position “I took on that role to fill that gap as a temporary measure.”

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will benefit from the addition of both RCMP retirees, Bob Couture and Dale Bendfeld. According to Couture “Senior management looked at, well, you should probably separate that role again and have a municipal employee take on that function. Now that role has again changed, and we now have a director that has taken on that role.” Bendfeld was recommended for the current position by Couture, who praised Bendfeld by saying “(He has) a tremendous amount of experience of close to 27 years in policing and the military, he was involved in activities all over the world.”
