Staff Layoffs at Fort MacMurray International Airport Protested by Airport Workers

Fort MacMurray International Airport, staff layoffs

Staff layoffs at Fort MacMurray International Airport are being protested by airport workers in the hope that this will make a difference and prevent the layoffs from happening as planned. Dozens of workers at the facility spent last Monday picketing the airport and protesting the decision that was announced. It is not just that the staff layoffs are planned but also that these workers will be replaced by a company which has used temporary foreign workers in the past which adds insult to injury. According to airport management the decision to contract out the custodial services currently handled by a custodial staff of 23 full time and 1 part time workers was to save costs and lower the operating budget. This move means that the custodial staff will be laid off.

If the staff layoffs at Fort MacMurray International Airport actually occur many fear that the services outsourced will be performed by temporary foreign workers. The company identified to take over custodial services on June 1 of this year has been identified as Bill’s General Cleaning, Imported Goods and Consulting Ltd. Has a past history of hiring temporary foreign workers and some groups argue that the company has ties to Bill’s Recruiting which is in the business of recruiting and placing temporary foreign workers. If that is the case then it would make sense for the company to use foreign workers to fill the jobs opened by the staff layoffs at Fort MacMurray International Airport. The idea that Canadian citizens would be let go so that foreign workers can replace them does not sit well with many people.

Staff Layoffs at Fort MacMurray International Airport Affect More Than 20 Workers

Fort MacMurray International Airport, staff layoffs

Staff layoffs at the Fort MacMurray International Airport has affected more than 20 employees at the facility. 24 members of the cleaning staff at the airport have been laid off from their positions, and the airport will be contracting out custodial staff services in order to lower the operational costs of the facility. Les Collins, the CUPE local 1505 president, said “The feeling was shock, obviously, and disappointment from the members.” Scott Clements, the Fort McMurray Airport Authority CEO, said “It’s a very material number. We didn’t do this because we’re in a downturn and we may not be done yet. We’re doing this because I need to present to the board the best long-term sustainability of my workforce.” The airport arrived at this step after reviewing the budget and trying to identify ways to reduce the facility’s operational costs.

Les Collins is disappointed with the staff layoffs at Fort MacMurray International Airport, and believes that the positions involved will be given to temporary foreign workers in order to achieve lower costs. This means that Canadians will be replaced with temporary foreign workers, and changes to this program may create problems with this model in the future. Gil McGowan, the Alberta Federation of Labour president, stated “It stretches the bounds of credibility that temporary foreign workers are not going to be used at the airport, and there’s certainly no way that this company can promise to keep costs down by only paying $14.50 an hour if they’re not using temporary foreign workers. There’s absolutely no way that they’ll find Canadians to work for those poverty wages even with the economy softening up in the Fort McMurray area.”

Second Runway Malfunction at Fort MacMurray International Airport in Same Week

Fort MacMurray International Airport, runway malfunction

There was a second runway malfunction at the Fort MacMurray International Airport last week, on Wednesday flights were delayed and canceled once again because of problems on the runway at the facility. No passengers or staff was ever in any danger, the airport operations team started flight delays as soon as the runway malfunction was determined. Four different flights were completely canceled and several others were delayed because of the runway issues, and the problem was a taxiway malfunction which started at roughly 5:45 pm and continued until around 11 pm that same night. Both events in a week led to the management team at the airport apologizing for any passengers who were inconvenienced because of the delays and cancellations. The good news is that the airport reported that the lighting system on the runway, which caused the first set of delays and cancellations Sunday, stayed online during this latest glitch.

When asked about the latest runway malfunction at Fort MacMurray International Airport commercial services manager Jesse Meyer said “The operations team at YMM is working around the clock to rectify the situation at hand. It’s very much a weather-related situation caused by the temperature fluctuation that occurred between last week and now. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we’re working as hard as we can.” On Sunday there were a total of 17 flights which were canceled because the runway lights were not working properly. If the problems persist then some travelers may think twice before using the Fort MacMurray International Airport if they have another choice.

Runway Light Failure at Fort MacMurray International Airport Under Investigation

runway light failure, Fort MacMurray International Airport

A recent runway light failure at Fort MacMurray International Airport is under investigation, and the airport was only affected for a number of hours before the problem was resolved. There were a number of flight cancellations and some travelers were inconvenienced but the incident did not cause any serious safety concerns. On Sunday at around 5:40 pm the staff at the airport realized that the runway lights used to guide aircraft for takeoff and landing has stopped working. The runway light failure affected airport operations until around 8:30 pm when the lights started operating properly again. In the meantime 17 flights were canceled as a result, and these included inbound flights as well as outgoing ones. So far the passengers affected have not been offered any compensation for their inconvenience although this is usually typical in this type of situation.

The Fort MacMurray International Airport runway light failure created unsafe operating conditions, and airport management had no choice but to cancel flights until the lights were repaired and in good operating condition. According to Joanne Barnes, who is the spokesperson for the airport, “Unfortunately, we don’t have data available on the number of passengers on the flights, as this is information collected by the airlines. To our knowledge, this type of incident has not occurred before.” The airport did add additional flights after the runway light failure was resolved in order to help inconvenienced passengers. The operations team for the airport is investigating the cause of the light failure. Passengers who were affected by the flight cancellations can send any feedback or comments to info@flyymm.com.

Fort MacMurray International Airport Experiences Exceptional Growth

Fort MacMurray International Airport, exceptional growth

Fort MacMurray International Airport has seen incredible growth in recent months, and more than 1 million passengers traveled through the airport in 2014. The growth rate calculated for the facility is a whopping 9.5% right now. There have been some drawbacks in the last year, and these include the cancellation of two different direct flights to and from Fort MacMurray. A plan to offer direct flights to Denver fell through, and so did a similar plan for Las Vegas, but this has not slowed the growth of the airport down much. Part of the growth is thanks to the new terminal which is modern and offers plenty of room for passengers and visitors. The increase in passenger numbers is not astonishing with all of the effort that has been performed in order to draw in additional flights and passengers.

According to Fort MacMurray Airport Authority spokesperson Joanne Barnes one of the top priorities at Fort MacMurray International Airport is creating new destinations and gaining direct flights between Fort MacMurray and the USA. Barnes said “It is the number one priority for the airport to regain direct flights to the U.S. We are also working hard to improve upon the number of leisure destinations that we offer to the community. Our passengers have certainly increased in number since our new terminal opened.” When discussing the exceptional growth airport authority CEO and President Scott Clements stated “These record-breaking numbers demonstrate just how essential the opening of our new terminal building was to support our dynamic community. We are proud to see traffic through the Fort McMurray International Airport continue to expand at a rapid pace.”
