Should Food Subsidy be Available to Fort Chipewyan?

Fort Chipewyan, food subsidy

Should Fort Chipewyan be eligible for a food subsidy? NDP MP Dennis Bevington believes that the community should be eligible for a food subsidy program, and is working to get Fort Chipewyan included. Bevington said “I know from personal experience, people in Fort Chipewyan will take the time to drive all the way to Fort Smith in order to get a load of groceries. That’s a good three-hour drive.” It is no secret that residents in the community often struggle with high food prices, and there is no permanent road access. Both of these factors are qualifying criteria for the food subsidy program. Bevinton resides in Fort Smith, more than 225 kilometres north, but the NDP MP has visited Fort Chipewyan many times, and he has seen the effect of high food prices on the local community.

If Fort Chipewyan becomes eligible for the food subsidy program this would allow local food suppliers and retailers to offset food transportation costs by the receipt of public funds. The goal is to have the subsidy pass down to consumers, who will see lower food prices as a result. Bevington said “We’re after fairness in the system. If they’re entitled to some assistance in that pricing, then they should get it.” Fort McMurray-Cold Lake Liberal candidate Kyle Harrietha said “It’s not a $24 tomato…But the higher priced foods, particularly perishable items, lead to people making different choices than they would in Fort McMurray. Often times, it’s less healthy choices just because of the lack of availability. Any small or medium thing that we can do, including encouraging nutrition and making available more nutritious foods, is a good thing.”

Fort Chipewyan Dr. John O’Connor Suddenly Terminated Without Explanation

Fort Chipewyan, Dr. John O'Connor

Dr. John O’Connor, a respected Fort Chipewyan physician who has been serving the local community for more than 15 years, has been suddenly terminated without any explanation. Last Friday evening Dr. O’Connor was informed that Fort Chipewyan no longer required his medical services, and up until that moment the physician felt that he was secure in his employment. Two other physicians in the local area will cover the role that the physician performed. When asked about the termination Dr. O’Connor stated “I feel like a part of my family has been ripped away from me. It’s very unsettling this was being discussed without me. I haven’t been told of any complaints made by me from patients or staff. I’ve always tried to be there for Fort Chipewyan. If I’ve done something wrong, I would love to know.”

Being terminated by Fort Chipewyan does not mean that Dr. John O’Connor will be applying for unemployment benefits any time soon though. The doctor is still a family physician in Fort McKay and the health director for the community as well as being involved with the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. As an on call consultant Dr. O’Connor was responsible for providing medical advice to paramedics and nurses, arranging for hospital admissions and medical evacuations, and refilling prescriptions. What makes the situation even worse is that the physician was informed that he was terminated through a chain email. According to Dr. O’Connor the email did not give a reason or explanation for the termination.

Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is Now Closed

Fort Chipewyan, winter road

The Fort Chipewyan winter road is now closed, and it officially closed on March 23 because of the warm weather that the area has experienced recently. During the winter the road is created through the use of snow compaction and the creation of ice surfaces over sand substrate. Ice bridges are also created over the rivers in the region as well. The municipality explained that the closure was due to warm weather and also to handle erosion control and traffic remediation so that caribou migrations are not affected. During the winter the road provides many benefits to traffic but warm weather makes it unsuitable for travel and poses safety risks in some areas. On March 14 the Saskatchewan La Loche Winter Trail was closed because of warmer weather as well.

The Fort Chipewyan winter road is the only route available for travel to certain parts of the remote region, and during the warmer months this travel is not possible. The road is created by using water to create a solid layer of ice which is approximately 6 inches thick, and the created road is staked off to provide guides that drivers follow along the way. The Fort Chipewyan winter road goes through majestic forests, and it is very common to see native animals like lynx, moose, and bobcat. The opportunity to take this route is no longer available until the cold season hits again, but there will always be another chance this winter when the Fort Chipewyan winter road is created and opened to traffic once again.
