Fort MacMurray Drug Bust Leads to Criminal Charges

Fort MacMurray drug bust, criminal charges

A recent Fort MacMurray drug bust has led to criminal charges against two local men, and the individuals charged are accused of being the leaders in a Northern Alberta drug operation that was widespread and highly complex. Jason Mulley, 31 years old, and Patrick Felix, 34 years old, were both arrested last Wednesday after an early morning drug raid uncovered large quantities of cocaine and the narcotic pain medication fentanyl. ALERT spokesperson Mike Tucker said the raid will have a big impact on the local community. “When you look at fentanyl alone, and the number of overdose deaths it’s been tied too, it’s a very violent drug. And clearly, with cocaine, a very valuable commodity, highly addictive, it can destroy lives and families. Closely, drugs are tied to violence, and the criminal underworld.”

The Fort MacMurray drug bust is believed to have shut down a trafficking operation that spanned across Northern Alberta, hitting Edmonton and Fort MacMurray. Both of the men arrested are facing many criminal charges that include drug trafficking and conspiracy to traffic in narcotics. As part of the drug raid 5 homes in Fort MacMurray were searched, and police also searched a hotel room and a supplement store as well. A total of 7 arrests were made during the raid. Tucker discussed the local rise in fentanyl use, saying “Its use has grown incredibly over the past year. It’s very potent, very addictive, and just causes whole sorts of harms.” Two firearms and a number of vehicles were also seized by the police. The investigation started two years ago. Also charged as a result of the raid were Fort MacMurray residents Spencer Brown, Mandy Gauvreau, Rachel Jurich, and Alexander Jurich. Levi Lund of Edmonton was also charged, and arrest warrants are pending for Gary Partridge from Fairview and 22 year old Paul Ohelo from Fort MacMurray.

Alberta Bank Robberies Lead to Criminal Charges for Wetaskiwin Man

Alberta bank robberies, criminal charges

A Wetaskiwin man is facing many criminal charges after committing 14 armed bank robberies across the Alberta province. 52 year old Christopher Allan Zubko is facing over 60 criminal charges and was caught in the act by the RCMP. Officer in Charge of the Strathcona County RCMP Supt. Gary Peck stated “These crimes put the public at considerable risk throughout many different communities in the province. The ability to work seamlessly with agencies across multiple jurisdictions proved invaluable in preventing further occurrences and potential harm to the public.” The 14 armed bank robberies occurred between January 2 and March 21 of this year. Eight of the banks robbed were in Edmonton, one bank was in Red Deer, two of the banks robbed were in Leduc, two were in Camrose, and one was located in Sherwood Park.

Some of the Alberta bank robberies involved the man facing criminal charges using women’s clothing as a disguise, and in all of the incidents the robber either showed a gun or stated that he had one. Staff Sgt. Simon Yum explained “When a teller gets robbed it’s very traumatic, and it’s especially more traumatic where a weapon is displayed, especially a gun.” Zubko was caught after his vehicle was pulled over by police and intelligence sharing led to surveillance on his activities. The arrest was made after Zubko was seen stealing women’s clothing and a wig, and then he put on the clothing and entered a Camrose financial institution. The arrest was made when Zubko exited the bank.

Wood Buffalo RCMP Officer Faces Criminal Charges

Wood Buffalo RCMP, criminal charges

A local Wood Buffalo RCMP officer is facing criminal charges after allegedly selling police investigation information. According to reports by the RCMP on March 25, 2015 Cst. Kyle Gordon Harrison was placed under arrest when allegations were made that Harrison took money in exchange for providing information from the official police database to an unknown individual. Bribery and breach of trust are two of the charges that may stick against the officer if he is found guilty of providing the information and taking money for this. According to Insp. Gibson Glavin the source’s identity and the time of the alleged incidents can not be released yet because the case has not been presented to trial at this early date, however Glavin did say that there was more than one occurrence suspected over an unspecified period of time.

According to Wood Buffalo RCMP Insp. Gibson Glavin “We’re not going to be able to release the specific instance that brought this to our attention because that’s going to form a significant part of the evidence at trial.” he said. The database which was breached by the officer facing criminal charges contains data on information collected during the course of investigations that the RCMP conducted, and privacy legislation protects the information that was accessed and given out by the officer who is charged. “We recognize that the only way that police can properly do our business is if the public has confidence in us and trusts us, so getting on these things quickly is partly how we do that. This member of the RCMP will have an opportunity to have this heard at court, and there’ll be a decision as to whether that’s proved or not at that point.”

RCMP, criminal charges, fatal hit and run

A man facing numerous criminal charges, including some for a fatal hit and run in Ontario and others for crimes in Edmonton, was arrested at a camp North of Fort MacMurray by the RCMP. 25 year old Abdullahi Mohamoud was living in one of the oilsands camp, and another camp tenant recognized the wanted man from earlier articles in the news which included a photo of the suspect and alerted local authorities. Cst. Ashley Quallie, the Wood Buffalo RCMP spokesperson, said “When we learned that information from the individual who recognized him, we executed the Canada-wide warrants and arrested him. He has used aliases over the years, but we don’t know if he was using one while here.”

Part of the criminal charges against Abdullahi Mohamoud stemmed from a fatal hit and run in 2011. According to police Mohamoud put $75 in gas in his car on May 19, 2011, and then drove off without paying. The attendant at the station, 62 year old Hashem Atifeh Rad, chased after Mohamoud and grabbed the vehicle door handle. Rad was dragged along the vehicle for several meters before falling and hitting his head on the pavement. The next day the gas station attendant died in the hospital from his injuries. Mohamoud was also wanted for charges in Edmonton which include sexual assault, unauthorized possession of a firearm, sexual interference, uttering threats, permit escape, failure to comply with conditions of release and failure to appear in court. Police consider Abdullahi Mohamoud to be a violent criminal who is an escape risk.

A Fort MacMurray pedestrian was recently pronounced dead after a fatal hit and run, and the driver of the vehicle will face criminal charges. As the victim was walking across the street at 2 a.m. on Franklin Avenue right in front of the 7-11 he was struck by a car. The victim of the fatal hit and run was eventually identified as Albert Mercredi, a 46 year old whose aunt Angelina Pratt wrote about his death in her blog. Mercredi was seriously injured as a result of the collision and he was taken to a hospital in the Edmonton area using medevac. At 6:20 pm Sunday Albert Mercredi was taken off life support and he passed away from the injuries that he received when he was stuck by the vehicle.

The driver who was involved in the fatal hit and run in Fort MacMurray could face a number of criminal charges. The driver has been identified as 28 year old Gaetan Henri Joseph Cartier, and the initial reports from police indicate that Cartier fled the scene after hitting the victim with his vehicle. Wood Bufflalo RCMP arrested Cartier after they received a complaint about a hit and run. According to the victim’s aunt Angelina Pratt “I remember him as a gentle and loving person. He was kind. He was funny. Some might remember him when he occasionally directed traffic in Fort McMurray. He was loved by many. He enjoyed life. He loved and was so proud of his only child, his daughter Antoinette. He loved his mom and would always tell to her not to worry about him and that he would take care of her. But she worried about and prayed for him. He didn’t deserve to have his life taken from him in this manner.”
