Government of Canada announces appointment of Crystal Lennie to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Governing Council

Today, the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, announced the appointment of Crystal Lennie to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Governing Council.

Ms. Lennie brings extensive experience in Indigenous health and community development to the Governing Council. An Inuvialuit beneficiary from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, she holds a Master of Public Health in Health Promotion from the University of Alberta. She has worked with the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, served as Co-Chair of the Inuit Public Health Task Group, and contributed to national Indigenous health initiatives, community-led research, and efforts to improve health outcomes for Inuit and northern communities.

CIHR creates new scientific knowledge and enables its translation into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health care system.

The Government of Canada is committed to appointing highly-qualified candidates to best serve the interests of Canadians and is committed to open, transparent, and merit-based processes for selecting Governor in Council appointees. Appointees play a fundamental role in Canadian democracy as they serve on commissions, boards, Crown corporations, agencies and tribunals across the country.

Minister Gull-Masty joins the National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Incorporated to announce renewed Indigenous-led housing initiative

A safe and affordable place to call home is the foundation for strong families and communities. Indigenous organizations know the housing needs of the people they serve and are best placed to develop solutions that reflect their communities, cultures, and priorities.

Today, the Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty, Minister of Indigenous Services, joined John Gordon, Chief Executive Officer of the National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Incorporated (NICHI), to confirm $300 million in renewed funding for NICHI’s “For Indigenous, By Indigenous” (FIBI) housing initiative. NICHI is an Indigenous-led organization that works with Indigenous housing and service providers across the country to advance housing solutions for Indigenous Peoples living in urban, rural and northern communities. The announcement was made at NICHI’s Indigenous Housing Action Day during its Annual General Meeting in Ottawa.

The funding will go toward Indigenous-led housing projects that support a long-term Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy grounded in Indigenous priorities and leadership. The renewed funding brings the federal government’s total investment with NICHI to $581.5 million.

NICHI’s Board of Directors and Project Selection Advisory Council (PSAC) reflect the organization’s national reach, with representation from across the country and decades of experience in Indigenous housing and service delivery. This means that Indigenous housing and service providers are not simply delivering a government-designed program; they are helping design and lead it. This is For Indigenous, By Indigenous decision-making in action.

Most importantly, this investment will translate into safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate spaces for Indigenous Peoples from coast to coast to coast.

Minister Michel and Secretary of State van Koeverden mark Concussion Awareness Week 2026, Reinforcing Commitment to Safety


OTTAWA, September 27, 2026

Today, the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, and the Honourable Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport), released the following statement:

“This Concussion Awareness Week, we have an opportunity to bring greater attention to brain health, the importance of recognizing concussions early and keeping people safe. A concussion can result from a hit or jolt to the head, neck, face or body, and its effects can go beyond physical symptoms, affecting how a person thinks, feels and sleeps.

Concussions can affect people of all ages. In 2025–26, an estimated 117,500 Canadians aged five and older were diagnosed with a concussion in emergency departments across the country. These numbers underscore why awareness, education and prevention are so critical.

The Government of Canada is supporting research to better understand, prevent and manage concussions. Through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, investments are advancing concussion monitoring and prevention, promoting safer sport environments and strengthening awareness among children and youth.

If you think you or someone you know may have a concussion, seeking advice from a health care provider and monitoring symptoms are crucial first steps. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, feeling foggy and changes in sleep. Getting the right care and support early can help put people on the path to recovery.

We all have a role to play in raising awareness about concussions. Through conversations among youth, coaches, parents, educators or health professionals, sharing trusted information can help people recognize the signs of a concussion and know what to do next. Resources from the Public Health Agency of Canada and Parachute offer practical guidance to help Canadians respond with confidence.

This Concussion Awareness Week, let us continue to turn knowledge into action and work together to build healthier, safer communities.”

Government of Canada invests in Nuit Blanche Ottawa event


OTTAWA, September 26, 2026

Artists and cultural organizations bring our communities to life and contribute to a strong and vibrant creative economy. Through art, Canadians can come together, learn from one another, and experience our country’s rich diversity and culture.

Today, the Honourable Mona Fortier, Member of Parliament (Ottawa–Vanier–Gloucester), announced $20,000 in funding for Nuit Blanche Ottawa’s event, Dialogues lumineux: Cultures en conversation contre le racisme. She made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages.

This Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program funding will contribute to Nuit Blanche Ottawa’s immersive nighttime programming, featuring experiences that celebrate our rich culture and promote intercultural understanding. Developed in partnership with eight embassies from Europe, Africa and the Americas, the event will include panels, interactive workshops, activities and works of art.

By celebrating the rich cultural diversity that makes our communities stronger and creating opportunities for Canadians to come together, we are building an even more united and inclusive country for all.
