A special needs student is blaming Alberta’s premier over the elimination of a program at the Grande Prairie Regional College in Fairview that helps adults with disabilities learn the necessary skills to live on their own and find a job.
“Jim Prentice said in his budget speech that vulnerable people would not be impacted by the budget,” said Justine Cuvelier, 19. “They’re going back on their word.”
The Transitional Vocational Program, offers adults with special needs a bridge between living at home and living and working in the community, according to the colleges website.
It focuses on five key areas: employment training, independent living skills, work placement, and graduate follow-up.
Cuvelier said the program has made a huge difference in her life.
“It’s helped me become a better person and be more confident with my disability,” she said.
“I’ve learned budgeting skills, I’ve learned how to pay bills, I’ve learned cleaning skills, cooking skills and I’ve also learned how to get a job.”
Waiting list to take course
Cuvelier said she was upset after learning the program will be dropped due to budget cuts.
The program, established in 1969, accommodates about 20 students each year. It is fully subscribed every year with many applicants left on a waiting list.
College president Don Gnatiuk said the school is having to make tough decisions and the program is just one of several that will be cut.
“Right now we’re currently working towards $5.2 million out of our budget over the next two years,” he said.
“We’re not happy about shutting any programs down. There are others that we’ll announce later in the month as will other institutions and we’re not happy about that.”
Cuvelier said she realizes the college is in a difficult position and she blames the province.
“I’m very upset about this. I think everyone should get a chance to experience what I’ve experienced.”
