Canadians share outrage over missing and murdered indigenous women and RCMP statement

Canadians took to social media this week to share their outrage about the lack of action from police and government on the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women in the wake of a CBC News investigation into 230 unsolved cases.

Listen to the inteviews, and then tell me those families don’t deserve the answers only an inquiry can provide. #MMIW #cdnpoli

@DartmouthDerek

Everyday I am more encouraged by the news coverage of #MMIW. #Canadians want answers. Where is the #NationalInquiry ???

@K_NicholeB

There were calls from Liberals and New Democrats for more action

We need to take collective & collaborative concrete actions to address this national issue #MMIW MT @connie_walker http://t.co/7pYPYO4PlW

@DavidZimmerMPP

I don’t know how any reasonable human can read that #MMIW story by @CBC and oppose a public inquiry. #cdnpoli

@gmbutts

From @CBCNews: “Families of missing and murdered indigenous women give police a failing grade” http://t.co/5iBSVQNRVw #MMIW #wecare

@nikiashton

This must end. Time for an inquiry. #MMIW @jojolly https://t.co/fnae9ssXHS

And outrage at the RCMP for announcing that seven out of 10 murders of aboriginal women are committed by aboriginal offenders

The RCMP should now disclose the percentage of non-native murder victims killed by members of the same ethnic group

@WabKinew

Disappointing that this rolls the clock back on “bias free policing”

@WabKinew

@WabKinew @globeandmail Important to contextualize, the rate of women’s death in the gen pop from fam member is even higher, at 74%

@idilosophy

Women r more likely 2b murdered by family/spouse regardless of race. Valcourt & RCMP releasing stat implies it’s a specifically NDN problem.

@ArielSmithFilm

Why is it okay 4 RCMP 2 go against their own policy 2 release stats on race of perps ONLY 4 Native men w/out comparisons for context. #MMIW

@ArielSmithFilm

When White people kill White people, it’s never framed as a racial issue because White is ‘normal’ and ‘races’ belong to others.

@apihtawikosisan

Many criticized Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt for originally citing the statistic

Valcourt and his ilk feed into a pre-existing belief in Canadian society that there are no external causes to #MMIW.

@apihtawikosisan

Valcourt’s effort to deflect state responsibility for #mmiw onto some inherent prob w Indig men – thinly veiled racism of the worst kind

@sarahshulist

While others took on PM Stephen Harper

.@pmharper It is time you did something about 1,200 #MMIW. You’re the Prime Minister of ALL #Canadians. http://t.co/qaeAOPuQ6j #cdnpoli

@Matthew_Barlow

Two stories lead @CBC‘s website. One of them is deemed a “non issue” for Canadians by the Harper government. #MMIW pic.twitter.com/qICYRTLDRB

@HisFeministMama

It’s not on the radar of @pmharper but @CBC intends to hold a national discussion about #MMIW http://t.co/zNgy8DmLln

@eloquentcomic

This is why we need a public broadcaster. http://t.co/L6UbDiso4k @pmharper won’t call an inquiry. @CBC speaking up for #MMIW #canpoli

@lisamer_turner

Some noted that addressing domestic violence will be a key part of solving the problem

Addressing domestic abuse key component in preventing violence against Indigenous women #mmiw http://t.co/ksWmkafunt pic.twitter.com/rLOcI97f8z

@starleigh_grass

ALL MEN need 2B accountable & stand up 2 violence against women in their communities, including Indigenous men. Many are & I celebrate them.

@ArielSmithFilm

And that every missing person deserves an investigation

Young people who go missing, considered by police to be runaways & don’t investigate, still have the right to be looked for! #MMIW

@HansfordJen

Many were overcome by emotion

I just had to pull over for Matthew on @cbcasithappens sharing Claudette Osbourne’s story. So powerful, frustrating & heart-wrenching #MMIW

@chris_gallaway

My heart sank listening to this husband/father talk about his missing wife on @cbcasithappens. Listen here: http://t.co/ilnBSwmW4S #MMIW

@YuLeoW

I feel like I got the wind sucked out of me, my cousin Katie (Sylvia) Ballantyne is pictured in this article. #MMIW http://t.co/qKQWaiMEmg

@IndigenousXca

And thanked the CBC

Thank you @CBC for creating this database of #MMIW which authorities should have had in place a long time ago http://t.co/rwxKdOqwKr

@DarylDolynnyNWT

Thank you CBC, for working in this story. These women are more than stats #importantwork #mmiw https://t.co/fVGMa8XfZm

@ThaliaHibbs

Great #CBCinvestigates series, @CBCNews! Thanks for helping to turn the spotlight on #MMIW. Canada’s racism is uglier than we like to think.

@DanielleRowaan

Thank you @CBC for creating this database. Daunting and powerful. Hope it can shed light on some of the cases #MMIW http://t.co/fn6H7lP3jN

@soniaboileau

Another reason I support having a strong public broadcaster: The #CBC‘s current work on unsolved #MMIW & girls cases. So important. #cdnpoli

@chris_gallaway

This is not my Canada.But this IS my CBC. @CBCNews has stories of 230 women, comments from 110 family members: http://t.co/UnPcZQ9Tk9
