City sanding crews met winter’s arrival head on this weekend, said the city’s director of road maintenance.
Between 50 and 60 sanding trucks worked around the clock after the snow began early Saturday, said Bob Dunford.
Crews concentrated on hills and bridges, especially in the river valley, as well as freeways and major arterial roads, he said.
The sudden arrival of snow led to hundreds of collisions across the city.
There were 213 crashes reported on Saturday, 25 of them hit-and-run collisions.
The numbers dropped Sunday with 117 reported.
So far there is not enough snow to implement a seasonal parking ban on collector bus routes or issue a neighbourhood blading schedule, Dunford said.
The city is encouraging Edmontonians to check blading cycles, parking bans and other roadway maintenance activities on its website.
Residents can also register to receive email notifications about parking bans and blading.
While temperatures will remain cold for the rest of the work week, little snow is expected, said Environment Canada.
