Gardening enthusiasts in the Moncton area are growing fond of a special compost made out of solid waste by the Greater Moncton Wastewater Commission.
The commission, which is now known as TransAqua, started combining solid waste with organic material several years ago.
But the compost wasn’t an early favourite with many gardeners.
Slowly that has started to change over the years.
Now, TransAqua said the compost is gaining in popularity and this year, they almost ran out of it.
Jordan Welsh, lead operator at TransAqua, said the compost they produce is safe, environmentally friendly and cost effective.
“Everybody I talk to, the feedback we get, everybody is very positive about it,” he said.
“Some people complain about it now, about putting it on their lawn, because they have to cut the grass so much, and it keeps the grass really green. Until the snow comes, your grass will be green. It’s amazing.”
The compost also helps those looking to grow vegetables, said Welsh.
Carrots from a garden where the compost was added grew to 30 centimetres in length and weighed just under a kilogram, he said.
The compost is not only being used by gardeners.
Bob Osborne, the owner of Corn Hill Nursery, near Petitcodiac, said he uses iit in landscaping.
He said more municipalities should be taking human waste and converting it into something useful.
“It’s a double-A compost, which is super compost, there are no down sides to it that I can see,” he said.
