Harley Quinn and The Joker Are Getting Their Own 'Suicide Squad' Spin-off

After Suicide Squad made over $750 million at the box office in summer 2016, it was only a matter of time before Warner Brothers and DC spun off its best and arguably most popular character — Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn — into her own franchise. And sure enough, in December they announced plans to adapt Gotham City Sirens, a comic series about the badass female villains of the DC universe, into a movie. Now, however, it looks like the Quinn/Catwoman/Poison Ivy-led flick has been put on pause — but possibly for good reason.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers is developing a “criminal love story” for Suicide Squad scene-stealer Harley Quinn and her beloved Joker, played by Jared Leto. Insiders quoted in the piece call the upcoming spin-off “an insane and twisted love story” and describe it as “When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine.” The article mentions it will go into production after filming of the inevitable Suicide Squad sequel is finished as that’s currently being fast-tracked by the studio.

Another interesting fact is that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are in final negotiations to write and direct the Joker/Quinn spin-off. Those are the same guys who made Crazy, Stupid, Love and the even more sentimental NBC hit This Is Us. So it’s pretty hard to imagine what their take on the — how do we put this nicely? — erratic duo will look like. Will we see Harley and The Joker having emotionally-revealing late-night talks over hot chocolate and popcorn in between bank heists and murders? It’s too bad they already used the title Crazy, Stupid, Love because that would have been kinda perfect for this project.

In case you’re annoyed, thinking Warner Brothers is pushing back a female-led movie to make a love story, we hear you. But according to Forbes, the latter is being made to set up why and how Harley Quinn eventually decides to leave her “Puddin” and hooks up with Gotham’s other resident badass babes. If this was an either/or situation, we’re definitely Team Sirens. But since it sounds like this way we’ll be getting two times the Margot Robbie, we’re going to go ahead and get excited about this announcement — especially if the end result is Harley Quinn breaking free of her abusive ex. She’s way (like, way, way) too good for him anyway.
