A researcher at the University of Calgary is trying to figure out why some young people recover from concussions quicker than others.
Dr. Michael Esser is conducting a trial study involving about 100 youth between the ages of eight and 18 who have suffered a head injury. He says it’s a mystery why patients, some with almost identical injuries, recover at different rates.
The study uses brain waves to examine brain function changes in those with concussions.
Esser says the results could help physicians tailor therapies when recovery takes longer than normal.
Kailey Lang, 14, of Calgary is part of the study. She had painful headaches for weeks after hitting her head while on a waterslide at West Edmonton Mall last March.
Lang says she hopes she can help others avoid suffering her painful fate.
