Licence plates have now joined the Battle of Alberta between Flames and Oilers

The Battle of Alberta is being taken to a whole new level — the streets.

Service Alberta introduced two new specialty licence plates Saturday, featuring the logos, slogans and colours of the province’s two NHL teams, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers.

Starting Nov. 19, the plates can be ordered from Alberta registry agents for $75, plus a registry agent charge, with $20 of that going to the province to cover the cost of making and shipping the plates.

The remaining $55 from each sale will go toward the Calgary Flames Foundation and Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.

Standard registration fees will apply if the plates are used on a vehicle.

“The new licence plates will allow the Calgary Flames Foundation to continue to make a positive impact on the lives of southern Albertans and build on the over $32 million distributed since inception,” said John Bean, president of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, in a statement.

“Albertans are passionate about hockey. We’re pleased to give them a way to not only express their loyalty to their favourite NHL team on their vehicles, but also give back to their communities,” said Service Alberta Minister Brian Malkinson.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the Battle of Alberta extend to licence plates on our highways and roads.”

The new designs are an expansion of the existing specialty licence plate program, which features the Support Our Troops design honouring current and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

In a statement, Natalie Minckler, executive director, Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, said proceeds from the licence plates will be used to help the foundation “pursue its goal of helping build strong, vibrant and safe communities, with a focus on programs that support health and wellness, education and minor hockey programing for youth in northern Alberta.”

The Flames and Oilers next face each other at 7 p.m. MT Saturday at the Saddledome in Calgary.
