Kate Middleton Borrowed Queen Elizabeth II's Earrings in Scotland
Someone’s been raiding Queen Elizabeth II’s jewelry box—and the culprit is none other than Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.
On Sunday, Middleton and the Queen were photographed heading to church together in Scotland while visiting Balmoral Castle. The Duchess accessorized her bespoke Catherine Walker look with what People reports were pearl drop earrings borrowed from the monarch’s collection.
As documented by the blog “From Her Majesty’s Jewel Vault,”, Queen Elizabeth had the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings made in 1947 shortly after she received seven large pearls in a pearl shell from the ruler of Bahrain as a wedding gift. Each earring boasts one Bahraini pearl, three baguette diamonds, one large round diamond, and four small round diamonds.
This isn’t the first time Middleton has borrowed the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings. According to People, the Queen first lent them to the Duchess for Remembrance Day back in 2016.
The Queen wore the very same earrings a year earlier, to the 2015 service.
According to People, Middleton has been loaned a range of jewels from the Queen’s collection over the years—including her wedding bracelet, Lotus Flower tiara, maple leaf brooch, four-strand pearl choker, and of course, Cartier “Halo” tiara (which she wore in 2011 for her wedding to Prince William.) And the Duchess of Cambridge isn’t the only member of the royal family to earn that privilege: Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, borrowed Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau tiara for her royal wedding. (Plus, on the occasion of their first joint royal outing, the Queen reportedly gifted Markle a pair of pearl and diamond earrings from her personal collection.)
