RCMP investigating fatal hit and run in Thorsby, Alta.

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon in a town southwest of Edmonton.

Officers with the Thorsby-Bretton RCMP were called to the scene at 3:45 p.m. near a Fas Gas service station on 52nd Street in Thorsby, Alta.

Police said a cube van was seen leaving the scene and has not yet been located.

RCMP media relations officer Sgt. John Spaans said the victim died at the scene after emergency services tried to administer first aid.

Spaans said the cause of the collision has yet to be determined, but police suspect “nefarious activity” may have been involved.

More information will be forthcoming as officers notify the deceased’s next of kin.

“This is not a normal thing in rural Alberta. It’s even more rare with it to have serious consequences,” Spaans told CBC News.

Investigators from Edmonton have been called to the scene as the investigation continues.
