The body of a six-year-old girl was found alongside her deceased 39-year-old father at a home in Red Deer, Alta., according to RCMP.
Officers with the Mounties’ serious crimes unit are investigating the deaths but police have so far not revealed how the girl or the man died.
The bodies were discovered around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday after police responded to the home for a check-on-welfare call.
Red Deer RCMP said Monday the investigation is ongoing but there appears to be no threat to the public.
“On behalf of the RCMP, I want to express our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” Supt. Ken Foster said in a news release.
“This is a tragic loss that affects our whole community.”
Teachers and classmates at the girl’s school have been notified and counselling is being arranged.
Police plan to hold a press conference at 3 p.m. in Red Deer to talk more about the deaths.
Autopsies on both bodies are scheduled for Tuesday in Calgary.
