Video captures couple crashing through Lake Winnipeg ice in truck

A Facebook Live video captured the terrifying moment when a couple were forced to jump out of their truck as it broke through frozen Lake Winnipeg.

Ko’ona Cochrane and her partner were driving on the lake near Hecla Island, approximately 150 kilometres north of Winnipeg, when the couple approached a ridge on the ice. As they drove over it, their truck suddenly crashed through the ice.

In the video, you can hear her partner telling her to “bail.”

“That’s my life, take that!” Cochrane can be heard yelling, grabbing her belongings before they escaped the truck.

Cochrane said she was travelling across the frozen lake to do laundry at her mother’s house in Peguis, Man. Immediately after falling through the ice, Cochrane said she called 911, who put her in touch with RCMP — but she wasn’t impressed with their response.

“F—-ing RCMP says ‘do you got anyone to come and pick you up?’ It’s like an annoyance to come and get us,” Cochrane said. “I can’t believe this happened.”

When CBC spoke to Cochrane at 2:30 p.m. CST, she and her partner were being interviewed by the RCMP. Both were uninjured.
