The mayor of La Loche, Sask., will speak to reporters today about the approaching anniversary of a shooting that killed four people on Jan. 22, 2016.
At 3 p.m. CST on Monday, Mayor Robert St. Pierre will lead a news conference to answer questions about how the community is recovering from the shooting.
Brothers Drayden and Dayne Fontaine, aged 13 and 17 respectively, were shot and killed in a house in the northern Saskatchewan community.
Soon after, two teachers — 21-year-old Marie Janvier and 35-year-old Adam Wood — were killed at La Loche Community School. Several more people were injured.
St. Pierre is expected to discuss new initiatives that have been launched in the community since the shooting.
Anniversary of deadly shootings this month
A private day of observance will be held in La Loche on the anniversary of the event.
In October, the teen charged in the shooting pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree murder, as well as seven counts of attempted murder.
There will be a hearing to determine whether or not the teen, who was 17 at the time, will be sentenced as an adult.
As is allowed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, psychological and psychiatric reports will be prepared for the hearing, which has been scheduled for May and June.
