Trauma team at Spruce Grove school to counsel students after boys killed

Radek and Ryder MacDougall are being remembered at Greystone Centennial Middle School in Spruce Grove where they had attended classes since the beginning of this school year.

A trauma response team is at the Grade 5-9 school to counsel students and teachers, Parkland School Division communications director Jordi Weidman said Tuesday.

Everyone at the school is coping as best they can, Weidman said. The trauma team will remain at the school for as long as its services are needed.

Radek, 11, was in Grade 6. Ryder, 13, was in Grade 8.

The boys were found dead in a Spruce Grove home Monday morning with the body of their father, Corry MacDougall.

The boys’ stepfather, Brent Stark, told CBC News that he and their mother, Tracy, arrived at 2 Haney Court in the Hilldowns neighbourhood to pick up the boys to take them to Whitecourt for the Christmas holidays.

“You go knock on a door and you see the legs of one of your boys laying on the ground, things don’t go too well from there,” Stark said Monday evening.

Radek and Ryder were described as ‘great boys’ by their stepfather.

Stark said the boys played hockey in Spruce Grove. He described them as “great kids.”

“Big hearts, that’s all you can say. Great kids growing up, they’re on top of the world and some f–king coward took it from them.”

On Monday, friends of MacDougall began adding a picture of a heart with R & R in the middle on their Facebook pages.

Autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday, RCMP said.

Police said they aren’t looking for anyone in relation to the deaths, and don’t have anyone in custody.

Sgt. Jack Poitras wouldn’t say Monday if RCMP are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide.
