Crown prosecutors will not charge Quebec provincial police officers following an investigation into the alleged abuse of Indigenous women in Val-d’Or, Que., sources have told Radio-Canada.
The Crown is expected to make the announcement on Friday. A spokesperson said Tuesday that prosecutors wanted to first meet with the women who made complaints about police conduct in the tiny community 600 kilometres northwest of Montreal.
Montreal police, who handled the investigation, said Monday that they turned over 37 files to prosecutors for review.
The investigation was opened in October 2015, after a report by Radio-Canada’s investigative program Enquête uncovered allegations of sexual violence toward Indigenous women in Val-d’Or.
