Edmonton city council is re-opening the debate over implementing security measures at city hall including metal detectors, bag checks and a glass partition.
It will also release the report it used to justify the measures.
Mayor Don Iveson says he wants the public to have a chance to digest what’s in the report before council reconsiders the issue.
Councillors decided to re-open the issue after they were criticized on social media for making a decision behind closed doors.
The results of the late October meeting were later leaked to the media.
A majority of councillors voted in favour of a 1.5-metre partition that would create a perimeter around the council table, in case anyone tries to rush past security guards.
They also approved a pair of metal detectors to be set up just outside council chambers, plus bag searches.
The councillors opposing the security measures spoke publicly a few days later on Oct. 27, criticizing the secretive approach.
On Tuesday, council voted to redo the debate, this time in public, pending the release of an edited version of the report.
It will revisit the issue at the next full council meeting later this month.
