An 8-year-old girl is dead and her mother is in hospital with serious injuries after their vehicle hit a guard rail near Breton on Saturday evening.
RCMP say a Ford pickup truck lost control and rolled into a guard rail on Highway 39 and Range Road 52, at around 8 p.m.
When emergency crews arrived, the child was found dead. The girl’s mother suffered “significant” injuries, police say, and was taken to an Edmonton-area hospital.
“At this point … she is still in surgery,” Cpl. Leigh Drinkwater said Sunday afternoon. “She is expected to survive her injuries.”
It’s not yet known whether alcohol or weather were factors in the collision, which remains under investigation.
Breton is around 100 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
