The Edmonton Oilers are unveiling the refurbished Wayne Gretzky statue this afternoon in anticipation of the inaugural Oilers opening night at Rogers Place.
CBC is livestreaming the ceremony at 12:45 MT.
The Oilers will unveil the Oilers Hall of Fame room along with the new home of the statue.
The Oilers said a major announcement will be made following the news conference, which will be attended by Gretzky himself.
Since 1989, the three-metre bronze statue of Gretzky hoisting the Stanley Cup welcomed hockey fans to Rexall Place in north Edmonton.
Designed by sculptor John Weaver with bronzesmith Don Begg, the 430-kilogram artwork went back to Begg’s Studio West in Cochrane, west of Calgary, earlier this summer for cleaning and refurbishing.
