The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) wants to hear how Saskatoon’s mayoral candidates are going to make life better for First Nations people.
Tomorrow, the federation will hold a mayoral candidate’s debate focusing on Indigenous issues.
“The fact of the matter is, we have many First Nations who do live in the cities,” said Chief Bobby Cameron. “What’s going to be the focus of these candidates when it comes to First Nations issues? What are they going to offer should one of them be elected?”
While Chief Cameron said he hasn’t heard much discussion of Indigenous topics during the campaign, he said it’s an important topic.
“I want to see more of a focus on Indigenous issues,” he said. “Education and employment opportunities, training opportunities, housing opportunities. It’s a big investment.”
Cameron said First Nations people have become a strong political force, and it’s important that they are listened to.
“We’re really encouraging our folks to turn out to this city election,” he said. “Votes matter. That’s where the power is. And when these candidates understand and realize that, they’re going to be more open to ideas.”
The forum will be held Wednesday, October 19 at 7 p.m. at the Saskatoon Travelodge.
