A suspect in the fatal shooting of five people at a Washington state mall was taken into custody on Saturday, Washington State Patrol spokesman Keith Leary said in a telephone interview.
The Washington State Patrol in a message on Twitter also confirmed a person had been taken into custody, ending the massive manhunt after a gunman opened fire inside a Macy’s store Friday night at a mall in Burlington, Wash., north of Seattle.
The suspect entered the mall without a weapon, and about 10 minutes later walked into the store with a rifle and opened fire, Lt. Chris Cammock of Mount Vernon, Wash., police said at a news conference Saturday morning.
Four women were killed, ranging in age from a teenager to seniors, said Cammock, who heads the Skagit County Multiagency Response Team (SMART). A man was also hit and transported to hospital, where he later died.
Canadian border guards were preparing for the possibility the suspect would to enter this country. He was last seen near a major freeway less than an hour’s drive from the border-crossing into B.C.
Police have not said where he was arrested.
