Edmonton police seek motorcyclist after close call with pickup truck

Edmonton police want to talk with a motorcycle rider who was almost hit by a pickup truck early Saturday.

At around 12:40 a.m., police noticed a red Ford pickup truck following closely behind a motorcycle, as they both travelled eastbound on 106th Avenue near 142nd Street.

When the truck and motorcycle approached a stop sign at 132nd Street, police say the truck swerved and attempted to hit the motorcycle.

After avoiding the collision, the motorcycle continued driving southeast on a walking path to Groat Road. The truck pursued, speeding southbound on 132nd Street. It failed to stop at Stony Plain Road, and drove aggressively to the area of 102nd Avenue and Wellington Crescent.

A man and a woman then left the truck and went into the ravine. A canine unit tracked the pair and they were arrested at around 1 a.m.

Police now want to speak with the motorcycle driver for more information about the near-collision. He is described as a Caucasian male, and was wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans, and a black, open-faced helmet, police say.

The bike is described as a black, “Harley-style” upright motorcycle with chrome detailing,” EPS spokeswoman Anna Batchelor said.

It’s not yet known if the truck occupants and the motorcyclist knew each other, she added.

“What the investigating officers believe is that this motorcycle was trying to get away from the pickup truck. The investigating officer said it was very surprising to see the pickup truck’s actions with police so close in that area,” Batchelor said.

“There was a danger to other motorists in the area.”

The 29-year-old truck driver has been charged with dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breaches. The 35-year-old female passenger, who had six outstanding warrants, was charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000.
