Hundreds of Edmonton students head back to school

Summer holidays ended early for hundreds of Edmonton students who headed back to school Thursday.

About 1,300 kids returned to the classroom as part of Edmonton Catholic’s year long schooling program, now in its seventh year. But students didn’t seem to mind cutting their summer vacation short.

“I’m so excited,” said Sabrina Mohanathas, 6. “Because I’m going to see my friends and do a lot of new things — I’m so happy.”

The number of teaching days stays the same. But the school year is spread out with two weeks off in the fall, winter and spring.

“I think it’s great for the kids,” said parent Margherita Gosselin. “They don’t forget as much.”

St. Alphonsus principal Groten said the more frequent breaks means his staff and students are less tired throughout the year.

“Teachers and students have more energy,” said John Groten. “They’re still eager to learn.”
