A Fort McMurray man has been charged with the sexual assault of a minor that allegedly took place in the day home the man operates out of his home in the Timberlea neighbourhood.
Shawn Giles, 30, was charged in July with two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference after Wood Buffalo RCMP investigated the assault of a person under the age of 16.
Police say the day home operates as an unlicensed childcare facility, and has been open for about three years. The day home usually houses about six children, they said.
Giles has since been released on the condition he doesn’t have contact with the victim under any circumstances, or anyone under the age of 14 without adult supervision.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
“When parents bring their children to a day home or any type of childcare centre, you’re leaving your children’s lives basically in the hands of these people, so you want to make sure they are cared for,” Const. Kandice Perry said.
Police have also reached out to other parents and are trying to identify any other victims. The owner of the day home is cooperating with the investigation, they said.
