RIO DE JANEIRO — Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard is out of the Olympic singles competition after a straight-sets lost to the 2nd seed at Rio 2016, Germany’s Angelique Kerber, on Monday afternoon.
Bouchard, the 22-year-old from Westmount, Que., broke Kerber’s serve early in the first set, then followed with a strong service game of her own to take a 4-1 lead in the set. But Kerber, relying on a baseline game that saw her sit back and wait for mistakes, won the next five games to take the set.
The 28-year-old German continued to put the pressure on in the second set, breaking Bouchard’s first service game to seize complete control of the match. Kerber finished it off, 6-4, 6-2, on a sparsely attended Centre Court at the Olympic Tennis Centre.
Bouchard is still alive in the doubles competition, where she will likely play on Tuesday with Gabriela Dabrowski. Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil will play men’s doubles later on Monday.
Pospisil lost in the first round of singles to Gael Monfils of France. Milos Raonic opted to skip the Olympic tournament.
