They performed at the farewell to Rexall Place in April, but a controversial Edmonton Oilers cheerleading squad won’t join the team this fall at the new downtown arena.
In a statement issued late Tuesday, the Oilers Entertainment Group said it “confirms the discontinuation” of the Oilers Octane cheerleading team, which was a first for a Canadian NHL franchise when it debuted in 2010.
“The organization is looking for a new direction related to the fan experience, both in-game and in the community, as we head to Rogers Place for our inaugural season,” the statement said.
“Details will be announced in the coming weeks. We extend a sincere thank you to all members of Oilers Octane past and present, in particular Dr. Mailie Harris, for their contribution to the organization.”
Harris was the Octane’s director and head coach.
The cheerleaders made their debut in December 2010 on a night when the Oilers lost 4-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Octane was made up of women between the ages of 18 and 29. They performed during games, interacted with fans and helped with promotions.
