Inuit community centre in N.L. gets big tech boost

Youth from the remote Inuit community of Hopedale, N.L., are getting hands-on experience with technology.

Non-profit organization One Laptop per Child Canada sent 20 tablets and two computers to the Nanuk Community Centre, situated in the small community of less than 600 people.

“Times have changed so quickly in our community and technology is a must, especially for our youth,” said AngajuKak Marjorie Flowers in a press release. Flowers applied for the tablets through One Laptop per Child Canada.

“I am so excited to have our Nanuk Centre chosen to receive these awesome computers and tablets. It will give our youth a chance to have free access to technology they may not have at home.”

The tablets arrived with pre-installed educational apps for literacy, math, science and Indigenous culture and language. In addition, the tablets include more than 100 e-books, including children’s stories written by First Nation, Métis and Inuit authors.

Since 2011, One Laptop per Child Canada has donated educational technology to more than 60 Indigenous educational institutions.
