2nd-degree murder warrant issued in death of Cyril Weenusk

A warrant for second-degree murder has been issued for a 22-year-old man in the death of Cyril Weenusk in the city’s downtown last week.

The warrant was issued for Geordie Douglas Wood of St. Theresa Point, Man., on Wednesday afternoon, a week after Weenusk was killed.

Weenusk, 26, was found injured near Portage Avenue and Donald Street around 3:50 a.m. on July 5. He later died in hospital.

He lived in Oxford House, Man., but was in Winnipeg to help his father, who was in the city for medical care.

Police said Weenusk, a father of four, had an altercation with a group of people in the area that turned violent and proved fatal.

Earlier, police said they were looking for at least three suspects.

Wood has dark hair and a slim build, police said. A photo was not available but police said if he is located people should not approach him and call police immediately.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786- 8477.
