'Treacherous' road near Velma E. Baker school needs crosswalk, parents say

There was a notable difference at the corner of 43rd A Avenue and 28th Street Thursday morning.

A teacher from Velma E. Baker School, wearing a fluorescent yellow vest was directing kids to get off their bikes and stick to the sidewalk so that they could cross the road at a marked crosswalk closer to the school.

Janelle Salmond has a child in Grade 1 at the school, with another starting kindergarten in the fall.

“I was really happy this morning when I came and saw that there were teachers and parents on those two corners,” she said.

“I will stand here when my kids are crossing and people will pretty much almost hit you, they don’t even slow down or pay attention at all.

“This intersection right here is the one that scares me the most.”

On Wednesday morning, an 11-year-old girl was hit by a garbage truck at the T-intersection.

Police say the City of Edmonton truck was turning left onto 43rd A Avenue at the time.

The bike struck the rear driver’s side of the truck and was dragged a short distance.

Parents dropping off their kids at the school were extra cautious today.

“I just think that we need more enforcement here in this area so kids are safe and parents can go to work without any anxiety,” said parent Yuvraj Verma.

Verma drops his daughter off at school everyday. He says despite there being two other marked crosswalks nearby, the spot where the accident happened needs to be marked.

“I think this is a busy spot. Right now we only have one major crosswalk, but we need definitely this painted.

“That way people know what’s happening, and kids know exactly where the crosswalk is, and even the drivers passing by can be more alert,” Verma said.

Other parents who spoke with CBC echoed the comments, saying they’ve called Velma E. Baker about the crossing.

Coun. Moe Banga, who represents Ward 12, was unavailable for comment, but his office reported just one complaint on file from March.

That caller complained about the excessive speed of drivers near Velma E. Baker School.

So far, no charges have been laid in the collision.
