Conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, 79, has died, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said.
In a statement, Abbott extended his “deepest condolences” to Scalia’s family.
The San Antonio News-Express said Scalia apparently died of natural causes while visiting a luxury resort in West Texas.
Scalia, appointed to the top U.S. court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan, was known for his strident conservative views and theatrical flair in the courtroom.
His death comes as the court is set to hear its first major abortion case in nearly 10 years, and ahead of key cases on voting rights, affirmative action and immigration.
“Justice Antonin Scalia was a man of God, a patriot, and an unwavering defender of the written Constitution and the rule of law. He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution,” said Abbott’s statement, which was posted on the official website of the Texas governor on Saturday.
“His fierce loyalty to the Constitution set an unmatched example, not just for judges and lawyers, but for all Americans. We mourn his passing, and we pray that his successor on the Supreme Court will take his place as a champion for the written Constitution and the rule of law. Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”
