Watch as glider takes to skies over Edmonton

Chris Gough says flying in a glider is the closest he can get to Mother Nature.

“Flying the weather is a little more freeing,” he said just days before competing in the Canadian National championship that runs from June 8th to 19th at the Olds-Netook airport north of Calgary.

The competition requires gliders navigate a 500 kilometre course at speeds up to 130 km/h, with no engine.

“It’s kind of amazing what we can do with no engine, with a short tow up and then we can fly very long distances very quickly,” Gough said.

Gough is part of the Edmonton Soaring Club, located about 80 kilometres east of Edmonton.

It offers gliding lessons to people who have never flown before and has courses for advanced fliers.
