There will be major traffic disruptions and parking restrictions downtown Wednesday as the city and Edmonton Police Service honour Const. Daniel Woodall with a procession and regimental funeral.
Disruptions will begin at 2 a.m. Wednesday and last all day, prompting the city to warn commuters and mourners against driving to the downtown area.
Northlands is offering LRT passengers free parking from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Citizens are invited to mourn Const. Daniel Woodall by attending his funeral procession or by watching the regimental funeral at the Shaw Conference Centre. (CBC)
LRT and bus service will be free for commuters and those attending the procession.
Road closures around the procession route, including 107th Street from the legislature north, Jasper Avenue, and Grierson Hill, will be closed starting late Tuesday.
They will begin reopening at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, starting on the west side of the procession route, except for Jasper Avenue from 95th to 99th Streets which will be closed until 1:30 p.m. and Grierson Hill which will be closed until 3:30 p.m.
All parking meters on the route will be unavailable starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
All regular transit will be detoured from Jasper Ave to 102nd Avenue.
The procession is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will begin at the Alberta Legislature Building and end at the Shaw Conference Centre.
People are invited to pay their respects along the route up to but not including Grierson Hill.
Members of the public are encouraged to wear blue clothing and blue ribbons on the day of the funeral.
The Edmonton Police Service Wives Association will be decorating the procession route in blue ribbons.
The one-hour funeral, which begins at 11:30 a.m., will have limited space so the city is encouraging mourners to view a live broadcast on large screens erected at
- Alberta Legislature, north of the fountains, close to the Federal Building
- Centennial Plaza, behind the Stanley Milner Library
- Jasper Ave & 97 Street, in front of Shaw Conference Centre
- City Hall
CBC NewsNet will show the funeral and procession live at 11 a.m. MT and will be simulcast on CBC Edmonton and cbc online.
