Alberta’s Information and Privacy Commissioner and the province’s Public Interest Commissioner have launched an investigation to see whether government documents were improperly destroyed by the province’s department of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.
Jill Clayton, the Information and Privacy Commissioner, said her office has received letters of concern about the improper destruction of records during the transition period after last week’s election.
Clayton and Peter Hourihan, the Public Interest Commissioner, will now investigate.
Hourihan said his office received an anonymous complaint that alleged documents had been destroyed improperly.
Clayton said the investigation could expand to include other government departments.
The investigation may include site visits, interviews with employees, Hourihan said.
The FOIP act does not apply to personal records of ministers, but does apply to department records, Clayton said.
