Police Investigating Death After Downtown Shooting
The police are investigating the death of a man after a downtown shooting early Saturday morning. At approximately 3:45 a.m. On Saturday, May 16, 2015 police discovered a male shooting victim downtown after receiving a report about gunshots in the area. The shooting victim was located near the exterior of a downtown apartment building close to the Fort MacMurray Clearwater Crescent area. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy is scheduled for this week to determine the exact cause of death. The police have discovered the identity of the victim but this has not been released yet. The investigation into the shooting death is being handled by the RCMP Major Crimes Unit – North, the General Investigation Section, and the Serious Crimes Unit.
According to RCMP Cpl. George Cameron the downtown shooting is not believed to be a random act, although the police investigating the death do have several leads that they are following up on. So far any connection to the recent Morrison Centre shooting has not been uncovered so it is not yet known if the two incidents are related in any way. The body of the victim in the downtown shooting on Saturday has been taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Edmonton so that the scheduled autopsy can be performed. Anyone who has any information on the latest shooting, or the incident at the Morrison Centre, are asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers in order to provide any information that they have.
