An Edmonton city councillor wants the city to collect signatures for street upgrades like decorative lamp posts instead of leaving the work to volunteers.
Residents can get fancier lamp posts when their neighbourhood comes up for revitalization, as long as more than half agree to pay the extra cost.

Volunteers get that approval by going door to door with a petition.
Coun. Scott McKeen has asked administration whether the city can take over that process.
The city already asks residents about sidewalks, he said, so it shouldn’t be too hard to add a question about upgraded lamp posts.
“Can’t imagine…the cost would be much more at all,” McKeen said.
“I think there would be a little bit more processing on our end, but we’re sending out the notice and the inquiry on the sidewalks as it is, so why not just add the light.”
Taxpayers would have to pay for the city to take over the petition.
However, McKeen said he thinks the cost would balance out over time as every community will eventually go through neighbourhood renewal.
