Baltimore’s mayor has lifted a curfew in place across the city for five consecutive nights in response to rioting over the death of Freddie Gray, who had suffered a several spinal injury while in police custody.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a statement Sunday morning that her goal was not to maintain the curfew any longer than was necessary.
The order for residents to stay indoors from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. was imposed last Tuesday and officials had planned to keep it in place through Sunday.

Protests since Monday’s riots have been peaceful, and the announcement of charges against six officers involved in Gray’s arrest has eased tensions.
The curfew did not stop thousands from taking to the streets on Saturday night to express outrage over the death of the 25-year-old black man. About 50 people were arrested.
Gray died a week after his arrest on April 12, when he was handcuffed and put in leg irons in the back of a police van.
