Norway House is officially a dry First Nation, but that hasn’t stopped attempts to bring illegal substances into the community.
RCMP have discovered several attempts to bring substances into Norway House since the beginning of February. On February 4, RCMP stopped a vehicle and found more than 600 prescription pills, a gram of marijuana, morphine pills and powder, and other drug paraphernalia. The vehicle had an Alberta plate connected to a stolen vehicle.
An Alberta man and woman were charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, and were supposed to attend court in Thompson, but they didn’t appear. RCMP believe they are now in Alberta.
On March 10, RCMP found another vehicle with illicit substances on its way to Norway House during a traffic stop.
A search of the vehicle revealed three bottles of alcohol and 130 grams of marijuana. Two people from Norway House locals were charged with trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime.
At the end of March, RCMP stopped a man driving alone. He had 50 bottles of alcohol in his car, according to RCMP. The man, who is from Norway House, already had existing liquor trafficking charges.
On April 14, RCMP stopped a vehicle with four people in it. After questioning, RCMP found 19 grams of cocaine, pills, a fake gun and cash. A Norway House woman was charged.
The three passengers from Cross Lake were not charged.
Two days later RCMP stopped an unregistered vehicle carrying 20 bottles of alcohol. A Norway House woman and man were charged with unlawful transportation of liquor.
Anyone with information regarding drug trafficking is asked to call a local police agency or RCMP detachment.
