Man dies in police custody after arrested at City Centre Mall

Provincial investigators are looking into the death of a man after he was taken into police custody late last night.

Edmonton police were called to City Centre Mall around 10 p.m. Wednesday to deal with a disturbance complaint.

Mall security officers had arrested an agitated 25-year-old man for trespassing.

As officers transported the man to the downtown police station, he went into medical distress and passed out.

An ambulance was called and took the man to hospital, but he was declared dead shortly before 4 a.m.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death, is investigating.
