It’s a bird, it’s a plane … no it’s a crane

David Sirr loves his job, despite the daily commute hundreds of steps up a ladder.

His office has one of the best views in the city.

The 21-year-old has worked as a tower operator on the arena project since last year.

With dozens of cranes dotting Edmonton’s skyline, there’s little doubt his skills are in high demand.

“Makes me think I’m pretty lucky to be one of them in the city,” he said. “I see about 15 every day, and I get to be one of the hundreds of people to be up there.”

That boom is being reflected at NAIT.

People lined up for days to get a spot in this year’s Crane Operator program. It’s expected to be full next semester.

A spokesman at NAIT said the province will decide how many crane operators they can train next year.

Sirr said seeing all those cranes gives him a sense of job security.
