Edmonton Oilers win NHL draft lottery, chance to pick Connor McDavid

TORONTO — The Edmonton Oilers have won the NHL draft lottery and the right to select Connor McDavid first overall.

McDavid is considered the best young talent to come along since Sidney Crosby.

This is the fourth No. 1 pick for Edmonton since 2010, joining Taylor Hall, Nail Yakupov and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

McDavid instantly gives the Oilers a boost as they try to end a playoff drought that dates to their Stanley Cup final appearance in 2006.

Edmonton had an 11.5 per cent chance of winning the lottery.

McDavid is expected to put on the Oilers jersey as the first pick June 26 at the 2015 NHL draft in Sunrise, Fla.

American centre Jack Eichel is expected to go second to the Buffalo Sabres.
