Bhardwaj steps down amid allegations of bribery

Edmonton MLA Naresh Bhardwaj is stepping down from the Prentice cabinet amid allegations of bribery in his nomination contest.

Premier Jim Prentice said he is disturbed by the allegations that Bhardwaj may have been involved with trying to influence a competitor to drop out of the race.

Prentice said he met with Bhardwaj this morning.

“While these allegations remain unproven, they must be treated seriously,” the premier said.

Bhardwaj was appointed associate minister of persons with disabilities by Prentice. He will remain as the MLA for Edmonton-Ellerslie.

None of the allegations against Bhardwaj have been proven.

Prentice confirmed the Progresive Conservative Association of Alberta is investigating.
