16-year-old driver killed in highway crash south of Edmonton

A 16-year-old boy has died after his pick-up truck crashed into a flatbed truck on a highway south of Edmonton.

Ponoka RCMP say the boy was driving east on Highway 53, near Range Road 262 Saturday when his truck hit the back of a flatbed that was stopped and turning left.

The teen, who was from Bluffton, was extracted from the vehicle by emergency workers and taken to a local hospital. He was later airlifted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, where he died of his injuries.

The driver of the flatbed truck was not injured. RCMP are investigating the crash and do not think speed nor alcohol are involved.
