ONE-ON-ONE WITH KANYE WEST AT LFW FALL 2015

“Why isn’t anyone talking to him,” I say in a hushed voice to the editor seated next to me at the Thomas Tait show. We had just filed into the super-sized warehouse space that served as the venue for the presentation – a space not unlike a giant cement box. By “him”, I mean Kanye West. There were rumours circulating since Day 1 (after he was spotted at Professor Louise Wilson’s, of Central Saint Martins, memorial service) that he would be in front row attendance at some shows, and I was intent on being there when those rumours became reality.

Let it be said that I’m no super fan. I don’t go into hysterics when I meet famous people. It’s part of my job. But, I was one of the few editors in the office who praised Kanye’s Adidas Originals collab. So, wanting to meet Yeezy during Fashion Week, when he was fresh off the release of his collection, was high on my list of priorities. Now back to the show. I spot Kanye hanging out front row and no one else seems to be noticing. So, I seize the moment and I head over to tell him that I promised my editor-in-chief a snapshot. He says sure – almost inaudibly – and I go for it. Then, I congratulate him on his collection, telling him that I gave it rave reviews (check out my initial take on it

He asks me to grab a seat and tell him what I thought about it. Now let’s all pause for a second. Kanye West wants to know what I think about his collection? Say it ain’t so.

I praise the performance art aspect of it and his bravery – because he took a huge risk with the installation and with the concept, one that is acceptable when authored by fashion veterans, but less so by newcomers (even though, technically, Kanye’s not new to the fashion stage). I ask him what he was thinking when he designed the collection and he said very simply that it was all about empowerment. He described the smallest girl in the presentation as the most powerful and commanding presence.

There’s more, but it got a little fuzzy because I was overwhelmingly excited to have the opportunity to chat informally and in real time with Kanye about his work. There’s something to be said about the unbridled vision he runs with. He gets things done, and that’s what I like about him. #RESPECT
And to all those in the audience who wanted to talk to him but didn’t. You missed out.
