Naya Rivera recently started a controversy when she commented about showering habits and the differences between minorities and white people when it comes to this practice. Rivera told viewers of The View that “I have to say I have a theory about showering, [which] is that I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics. I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing.” Best known for her acting role on Glee the 28 year old discussed her husband, who is white, and the fact that he showers more than once a day. Rosie O’Donnel pointed out an African American female I the audience and told Rivera “Look, there is an African-American woman right there in a yellow shirt that is about to have a heart attack.”
After being put on the defensive Naya Rivera tried to clarify her comment about showering habits, explaining that she is the daughter of a woman who is mixed, with both Puerto Rican and African American ancestry. Rivera stated “She showers every day, so I can say this. But I can say that I am now married to a white man [Ryan Dorsey], and he showers a lot. Like, a lot — two, three times a day. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?'” Naya followed up with “A study says… a dermatologist says you are only supposed to shower once or twice every three days, so I’m right on the mark.” Many watchers were quick to respond on social media, and many of the comments were highly negative.
