Fort MacMurray International Airport has seen incredible growth in recent months, and more than 1 million passengers traveled through the airport in 2014. The growth rate calculated for the facility is a whopping 9.5% right now. There have been some drawbacks in the last year, and these include the cancellation of two different direct flights to and from Fort MacMurray. A plan to offer direct flights to Denver fell through, and so did a similar plan for Las Vegas, but this has not slowed the growth of the airport down much. Part of the growth is thanks to the new terminal which is modern and offers plenty of room for passengers and visitors. The increase in passenger numbers is not astonishing with all of the effort that has been performed in order to draw in additional flights and passengers.

According to Fort MacMurray Airport Authority spokesperson Joanne Barnes one of the top priorities at Fort MacMurray International Airport is creating new destinations and gaining direct flights between Fort MacMurray and the USA. Barnes said “It is the number one priority for the airport to regain direct flights to the U.S. We are also working hard to improve upon the number of leisure destinations that we offer to the community. Our passengers have certainly increased in number since our new terminal opened.” When discussing the exceptional growth airport authority CEO and President Scott Clements stated “These record-breaking numbers demonstrate just how essential the opening of our new terminal building was to support our dynamic community. We are proud to see traffic through the Fort McMurray International Airport continue to expand at a rapid pace.”
