Landfill-bound trucks with loose loads are turning Edmonton’s Yellowhead Trail into a garbage-strewn roadway, concludes the city’s 2014 litter audit.
“Due to the high-traffic volume of this corridor, and its use for commercial vehicles transporting materials to city landfill sites, the occurrence of construction debris, vehicular debris and home article litter is relatively high,” the report says.
“These materials are likely the result of unsecured and untarped loads of waste resulting in materials being ejected from moving vehicles.”
This year’s Yellowhead Trail audit found two-thirds more garbage on the busy arterial corridor than a similar audit in 2010.
The news is better for the rest of the city.
The litter audit found more than 40 per cent less litter on city streets than in 2009.
