Documents suggest that emergency rooms at the Misericordia, Royal Alexandra, Grey Nuns Hospital and the Westview and North West Health Centres have major operational or design issues that require immediate attention.
The documents, obtained under a Freedom of Information request, show the surgical departments of all three major hospitals in Edmonton are fully or partly in the so-called “red zone,” NDP Leader Rachel Notley said.
She says these deficiencies are a result of decades of intentional neglect by the governing Tories, adding Premier Jim Prentice and Health Minister Stephen Mandel need to take action now.
“I don’t care if the premier got elected yesterday,” Notley said. “This is his responsibility. This is the current health minister’s responsibility.”
Alberta Health Services is expected to respond to the documents at 1 p.m. this afternoon when it releases its 2030 plan for health care facilities in the Edmonton region.
